The Lord’s Prayer

My Mother's Daughter

When I was a small child, my mother worked with me to memorize the Lord’s Prayer.  When she would put me to bed every night, she would ask me to recite it.  It was very important to her that I learn this.  When I got older, like 12, she would trust me to recite it on my own without her present before I went to bed.

As a youngster, it was tedious.  I did not understand why I had to do it.  I mean, I knew I was to pray at bedtime, but why must I change the prayer that I was taught when I was younger, which was much shorter and included people for me to pray for?  “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
